His Teachings Will Never Fail!

A reflection for the start of the Academic Year in Washington DC: This painting is in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. It was painted c.1640 by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo. The painting depicts 'The Vision of fray Lauterio' who was a Franciscan student of theology. As he hesitated to learn from St Thomas Aquinas's writings, the Blessed Virgin appears to him together with St Francis and St Thomas. St Francis, pointing to St Thomas, says to fray Lauterio: "Believe him because his teachings will never fail"! Approriately, fray Lauterio holds a copy of the 'Summa theologiæ' of St Thomas Aquinas in his left hand.
