St Benedict of Nursia

Today, 11 July, is the feast of St Benedict of Nursia, traditionally said to have lived from 480–547. He is the father of Western monasticism, and his Rule forms the basis of all monastic life in the Western Church. In 1964 on the occasion of the dedication of the rebuilt monastery of Monte Cassino, where St Benedict had established his first monastery, Pope Paul VI proclaimed St Benedict the principal heavenly patron of the whole of Europe. This stained glass of the saint is from the apse of the Dominican church of St Louis Bertrand in Louisville, KY.
