St Edmund

Today, 20 November, is the feast day of St Edmund, king and martyr, who died in battle on this day in 869 ( or 870). He was king of East Anglia from c.855, and after his death he was venerated at Bury St Edmunds, near the site of his death. "O God of ineffable mercy, you gave grace and fortitude to blessed Edmund the king to triumph over the enemy of his people by nobly dying for your Name: Bestow on us your servants the shield of faith with which we can withstand the assaults of our ancient enemy; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen". Detail from a stained glass window in St NIcholas's Cathedral in Newcastle.
