St Martin of Tours

Stained glass in Baltimore Cathedral of the charity of St Martin who shared his cloak with a beggar. This cloak of St Martin, called a capella was preserved as a sacred relic in Tours, in a chapel built for it; the cloak was venerated by the Frankish kings as a sacred relic, and it was borne before them in battle and used to give sanctity to oaths, and the name “chapel” (and variations) was applied to the sanctuary in which this cloak was preserved under the care of its cappellani or “chaplains”.
