St Philip Neri

St Philip, whose feast is today, was born in Florence in 1515 but spent most of his life in Rome, and is known as the city's "Second Apostle". He had a mystical experience in the catacomb in 1544 when he felt himself "divinely filled with the power of the Holy Spirit", causing his heart to dilate. Ordained in 1551, he founded the Congregation of the Oratory. He was noted for his constant joy, a fruit of the Holy Spirit, and the love he showed to those who came to him for counsel or confession. This miniature of the saint is from the Oratory in Birmingham, and my sermon for the feast of St Philip can be read here.
