St John Ogilvie SJ

From the Roman Martyrology for 10 March: "At Glasgow in Scotland, [the death in 1615 of] Saint John Ogilvie, Jesuit priest and martyr. After working for many years in the study of sacred theology as an exile in the kingdoms of Europe, he was ordained a priest secretly and returned to his native land, where he exercised all kinds of pastoral ministry for his countrymen with the greatest diligence, until, thrown into prison and condemned to death under King James VI, he accepted the glorious palm of martyrdom on the gallows". This is a detail of a new 8-metre-high painting by the Scots artist Peter Howson of Scotland's only Reformation martyr. It hangs in the Blessed Sacrament chapel in St Andrew's Cathedral in Glasgow. A good biography of the saint may be found here.
