St Bartholomew

St Bartholomer, whose feast is on 24 August, was born at Cana and brought by the apostle Philip to meet Jesus. Nothing further is known for certain. Eusebius speaks of him in India, but the Roman Martyrology has him martyred in Armenia, skinned alive according to the Persian custom. He is shown holding the knife with which he was skinned. This stained glass window by William Wailes is in the church of St John the Baptist in Newcastle.
